More about Dresden
Saxony’s capital Dresden first appears in official documents dating back to 1206. The annals of architecture would be incomplete without the Dresden Zwinger or Brühl’s Terrace. The Church of Our Lady, the Semper Opera House and Dresden Castle are but a few of the historic landmarks forming the city’s famous face. The cherubs in Raphael’s Sistine Madonna draw international attention to Dresden’s art collection. Magnificent riverbank promenades, interesting museums, famous galleries and countless cultural attractions – there’s a lot to discover in Dresden.
Built between 1913 and 1914 in the old warehouse quarter, the huge depository was designed by Hans Erlwein to alleviate Dresden’s storage shortages. A heritage listed building of historical significance; it underwent 18 months of comprehensive restoration and reconstruction before reopening its doors as a Maritim Hotel in 2006.
Dresden is considered a major hub of international research and development. Significant players include the Fraunhofer Society, the Max Planck Society, the Manfred von Ardenne Institute and many of the companies in the technology park. Volkswagen’s ‘Transparent Factory’ is considered the world’s most modern automobile manufacturing facility and the glass walls afford visitors a fascinating peek into the company’s hi-tech processes.
The Maritim Hotel Dresden and the adjoining ICD enjoy an enviable location right on the river bank. The spot forms part of Germany’s ‘Elbe Cycle Route’ that begins in Bad Schandau and runs some 860 kilometres all the way to Cuxhaven. According to the ADFC, the path is the nation’s most beloved long distance cycle route. Paved and free of traffic for the most part, there are no significant level changes between Dresden and Cuxhaven. Meissen can be reached from Dresden as part of a day tour.
